Yamatai was once ruled by Himiko, the mythical Queen of Yamatai, who was said to command the power over life and death. Himiko was an asymptomatic carrier of a parasitic pathogen, but the Oni are supernatural guardians, not transformed humans, and the Stormguard are a distinct group of human warriors. She was entombed by her followers to prevent the spread of the pathogen. The tomb remained unseen for over seventeen hundred years until Mathias Vogel's expedition, funded by the Solarii Brotherhood, located it. The Solarii sought to harness Himiko's power for their own ends. Lord Richard Croft, Lara's father, visited and conducted research on Yamatai before his death. The island is treacherous, with violent storms, rapids, and a waterfall that nearly kills Lara after she survives a shipwreck.

In Their Own Story

Lara Croft travels to Hong Kong and hires Lu Ren, captain of the ship Endurance, to sail into the Devil's Sea and the island of Yamatai. The ship capsizes in a violent storm, and Lara washes ashore, knocked unconscious. She awakens to find Mathias Vogel, who claims he killed her father and adds Lara and Lu to his slave force. Lara escapes, survives rapids and a waterfall with the wreck of a wartime airplane, and reunites with her father, who is alive and staying on the island to stop Trinity. Lara infiltrates the Trinity camp, steals a satellite phone, and later opens Himiko's tomb. Inside, a Trinity soldier is infected by the pathogen, becoming a zombie. Mathias cuts off Himiko's finger as a sample. Richard becomes infected and sets off a bomb, killing himself and sealing the tomb. Lara forces Mathias to swallow the finger and kicks him into a pit trap, then escapes the collapsing tomb with Lu and the slaves via a Trinity helicopter.
